The Roesiti was pretty insanely good! It made us think it can also be the base to all fun meals like skillets, eggs on top, etc. When you first walk in, it seems like a bar but keeping walking to the back where they have tables, friendly service and a casual atmosphere.

Nice place, though a bit quiet for a Wednesday lunch. Had cheese curds and cured meat plate which went well with the local beer. The curds were pretty good the meat a bit dry and bland. My son had brisket which was a healthy slab. Overall good fair with huge portions if you appreciate such things. I'd go back for beer.

Go hungry, leave stuffed and with leftovers. What a cute place! We sat in the back and had a great time here. Our waitress was really sweet and we started off with a yummy cheese plate that was quite big to go along with our beers. I had the prime rib (the 20oz mind you) with yummy sides. There was so much food. Everything was so tasty. I'm a proud member of the clean plate club, but even I couldn't finish it. Fortunately our hotel had a mini-fridge. Great service, very nice people, well located in town. Would definitely go back.

On Saturday I visited the New Glarus Brewery in New Glarus Wisconsin. With the purchase of my first pint of beer, I received a complementary New Glarus pint glass and a gift certificate for a free glass of beer at one of like 5 local restaurants. Not being familiar with the area, my friend asked the beer wench for a suggestion. She directed us to Glarner Stube. As you can probably guess by the single star, I hated this place. In all fairness it was popular with the flies, they were in abundance. Ba peek at the window cill told me that this place was so popular with bugs, some decided that want to make it their final resting place. I ordered a stake sandwich with blue cheese sauce and mashed potatoes. I would have been more satisfied if I would have just dipped my $10 bill into the blue cheese sauce. The stake was pure garbage. Comparing it to the tongue of tennis shoe would be an insult to tennis shoes. The mashed potatoes weren't mashed and might not have even been potatoes. My friend had a brat and kraut. He said it was delicious.

It's been several years since I last visited the Glarner Stube, but my memory served me well. Our group had the fondue and cheese curds as an appetizer, and both were just as amazing as I remembered. 3 of us ordered the Reuben, which we all agreed was delicious. The fourth member of our group had the bratwurst dinner, which he raved about for 3 days! I'd love to give it 5-stars, but the prices were a little steep for my blood.

Loved. Great service and great food. Got there in a cold Saturday afternoon and sat right down. Had a cold NG fat squirrel on tap right away as we paired it with some cheddar cheese curds with an Asian beer batter. Then we had the fonduded beef which was really good (although somewhat chewy) with horseradish cream sauce that came with a Roesti potato and cheese cake. The best was a pork schnitzel sandwich that was so tender and juicy (add the horseradish sauce and it's even better). We had a great time. Would give this 5 stars but felt like prices were a bit high for what we had. Would come back though.

Been here about 4 times don't know why I never wrote a review for this place.... Oh I know why there's literally no cell service here I finally found the right person to ask for the wifi password . So really cute bar Swiss themed with a nice menu. I've had most of the same hitches today the perch sandwich with Swiss cheese of course . They have 6 new Glarus beers in Tao which is nice and a decent bar for cocktails. The cheese curds are beer battered very light with a home made ranch which is out of this world . So the things to order here Cheese curds Cheese fondue Ruben sandwich Perch sandwich Pretty decent burger The rosti potatoes which are these crispy hashed browns with cheese and onions in them Order them Well done for sure The meatballs The schnitzel Oh and if your not a beer person the try a brandy old fashion sweet ;)

How have I not recorded a review for the Glarner Stube? I've been here at least half-a-dozen times... well, let's give this a try: + Good selection of New Glarus taps; available in 5oz or pint pours + Full bar; drinks mixed well + Drinks are reasonably priced + Friendly staff - I seem to see the same staff with every visit - Smallish bar area; gets chilly in winter months (no double door) I've only had a few appetizers, and they were decent. Can't comment on the main dishes, although they look to be a tad "heavy."

Kitschy, touristy, a little overpriced, and delicious. What's Little Switzerland without a little Swiss food? Glarner Stube is located a stone's throw from New Glarus and smack dab in the center of the main drag. I went with the Swiss meatballs, smothered in a tasty mushroom tomato gravy. The accompanying roesti potatoes are the size of a frisbee, best described as a cheesy hash brown concoction. The wife picked the fondue, a not insignificant bowl of cheesy goodness. Did I mention the cheese? We're in Wisconsin, after all. Service was friendly, food was good, making it a nice stop after a brewery tour.

Yum! The perfect meal after a day at the local (Minhas and New Glarus) breweries! Starting off with the fondue is a great decision. It is full of flavor from the strong swiss cheese they use. It is brought to the table bubbling in a pot, and placed over a flame for you to enjoy with plentiful cubes of bread. If you are looking for something simple and satisfying, I highly recommend the pork schnitzel sandwich. It's got everything you'd want in comfort food: flavorful meat glazed with butter, garlic, and onions on a toasty bun. Everything at Glarner Stube is fresh and you can tell the sausage is made locally. Expect a wait if you go during peak hours. The dining room is small, but it feels right that way. If it were much bigger, it would lose the old world charm. But grab a local brew at the bar while you wait and enjoy the cozy atmosphere!

Planned to eat here after skiing. Checked their website. Yep, they were open. Based on reviews, we were really looking forward to it. We got there, and found a sign on the door "closed until March 5th". You'd think a place that has a substantial website with menus, pictures, history, etc could list something important enough as an extended closing. Not this joint.

Great food good service. Has lots of new glarus beer on tab. Excellent red velvet cake as well!

Kinda hard to expand on the 100+ other reviews. We had great food and service. The only thing I didn't like was the cheese curds. They were too big and some were all dough.

I really don't know under which circunstances some people like the food of this restaurant (and believe me, not even the beers we had at the brewery helped to make the food taste better) but it didn't make the cut for us. We haven't been to Switzerland yet but I think we can recognize when something taste really bland, burned or greasy and everything we tasted had either one thing or the other. Very dissapointing. I had the perch sandwich which had two breaded fish fillets and two slices of swiss cheese and on the side lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce. Very greasy and bland, all I tasted was oil. For my side I asked for their famous "roesti"(a potato pancake with dots of yellow and white cheese) also, very greasy and the bottom was completely burned, WOW. My hubby had a ribeye, he asked for medium well and it was rare, we let the waitress know about that and she took it back, second chance, it was exactly the same! And we had to pay $30 for that, WOW. The two stars are for a potato bacon soup we had, that was the only good thing we had there. It is unbelievable how a restaurant do not pay special attention to the dishes they serve to customers, I don't think we will be back.

The girlfriend and I got the weinerschnitzel and the swiss cheese fondue. The weinerschnitzel was done well. I would reccommend getting the swiss cheese fondue only if you are with 4+ people. It's quite the challenge for two but I felt pretty accomplished and uncomfortable once I was done. The atmosphere at the place was fantastic, especially with Polka fest going on.

Charming Swiss restaurant in Green County selected by Kristin and Chef Regi of Emmi Roth. Dining room that seats 40, was pretty busy on a Weds night with 90% tables filled. Decor was full-on Alpine. Smartly ordered family style to try as many different dishes as possible for 6 visiting Chef Educators from around the nation. Cozy, humming atmosphere, friendly but brisk service. Cheese curds piping hot and salty. Weiner-Schnitzel, Veal and mushrooms, Roesti Potatoes, BBQ Brisket and Sausages were all winners as was Red Cabbage and desserts. Nice selection of local beers.

Garner Stube is a great option for a meal or a drink in New Glarus. It's cute, cozy and full of Swiss decor. We stopped recently for lunch based on strong Yelp reviews and weren't disappointed. The dining area is small (maybe 12-15 tables) and it seems like a popular place so you may end up waiting a bit at busy times. In addition to New Glarus tappers they have a Swiss bottled beer which I'd never seen before. It was pretty good & fairly priced at $4/bottle. Even though they were busy, our food arrived quickly. Hubs had the prime rib sandwich special (weekends only) and dispatched it almost instantly. He said it was great - tender & not at all chewy or gristly. I went with a schnitzel sandwich which really should be renamed "pork tenderloin sandwich" as it wasn't breaded. Still, it was delicious - and a little healthier I guess. Any caloric savings was immediately spent on the roesti potatoes which are full of butter & cheese. The dinner menu has some fun options - delicious fondue & something called "Gary's Bowl of Beef" - who DOESN'T want that? Also, they hold claim to the "largest urinal in the Midwest" in the gents so that's another point in favor of the Glarner Stube.

This place is stellar. We were in the area from Chicago on the way to a bike race in Dodgeville and my buddy recommended it. Eight fantastic New Glarus beers on draft, friendly, helpful staff. We ordered the chicken and tortellini and the veiner schnitzel with roesti (swiss fried potato magic). Both were incredible. As was the soup. Just couldn't ask for a more delicious and delightful experience, replete with chubby and jovial wisconsin locals to finish the scene. Will be back for sure.

I had the veal schnitzel with roasti potatoes and it was delicious. The potatoes are worth the extra $3. Our food came out quickly and it was a little busy. They had plenty of staff working and all were friendly. Definitely come for food after going to new glarus brewery.

Had lunch here today, and a free years ago on our first visit. Husband is swiss with several visits to family in glarnerland so we had high expectations. They were definitely meet. He had the kalberwürst, and I had the pastetli with rösti. Meat is great, and the pastry. Their broccoli was perfectly cooked. They use cheese in their rösti so a little too rich for me (we are more used to no cheese, zurcher style). They even had quollfrisch beer, at a lower price than what you'd pay in Switzerland!! Very fun place, and authentic with some Wisconsin flair

Take the recommendation for the cheese fondue! Then maybe split an entree-the two of us shared the fondue and could not finish meals! They honor the free beer coupons from New Glarus too! Locals from Verona also frequent this place and it's a great option after a New Glarus Brewery tour.

I enjoy eating hear. The food is good and of course they have a good supply of the local brew on hand. The food is filling and tasty but a bit on the heavy side and a tad over priced. I do enjoy it but tend to seek out new alternatives due to the price.

  • Samantha S.

I guess my pork schnitzel sandwich just wasn't doing it for me. I found the food pretty mediocre. The other dishes ordered by my friends looked better tasting. Nice decor, great service! Maybe next time it'll be a better food experience!

Went here on a girls night out. All was really good. The large choice of New Glarus beers on tap, the Swedish Meatballs with this huge serving of cheesy hash browns and great service made for an amazing night. Just a wonderful place to go.

We live in New Glarus and "the Stube" has always been our favorite place in town! It's atmosphere is quaint and cozy and the quality of the food is always consistent. Forget going to Madison for Friday night fish fry - the best is right here!! Even the French fries are great, however, the Roesti is a must!! Prime rib is phenomenal but on a cold Wisconsin night, grab a glass of wine and order a pot of cheese fondue! Our only regret is their closing for the month of February which is my sole reason for 4/5 stars.

  • Jim H.

Excellent local fair. Quaint place and great service. I had the bratwurst dinner with the Swiss potatoes, which were awesome. Definitely worth stopping in if you are in New Glarus.

  • Scott M.

Had the Wiener Schnitzel and Röesti. Very well done. A little pricey but worth it. We asked around town for New Glarus beer on draft and German food. Garner Stube was recommended more than any other. The Fondue is a must have and next time the Geschnetzelets will be on our plate. It's a bar, dining area in the back. Local and friendly.

Both a truly authentic Swiss and Wisconsin "Supper Club" experience! My friend and I began our meal with Brandy Old Fashioneds from their gorgeous copper-top bar. The addition of a whole cinnamon stick really added to the flavor profile along with the maraschino cherries, oranges, and Angostura bitters. Skal! We ordered the Swiss Fondue as my friend had never tried this iconic Swiss nosh. Chunks of chewy bread accompanied our molten pot of local aged Alpiner cheeses and wine. The experience did not disappoint my friend. She actually dipped nearly everything from our meal in that pot. Bravo! Our Wedge Salads came out as we gorged on the Fondue. Beautifully plated, the kitchen staff wowed us again with local Blue cheese accompanying our cucumbers, tomatoes, house-made croutons and dressing. And at $5, this may be the biggest Wedge salad I've had at that price point. We ordered the Prime Rib special (12 oz. Queen for ~$25 & 22 oz. King for ~$30). Both we exquisitely medium-rare with a healthy side of horseradish sauce. My friend paired her meal with the traditional Roesti potatoes ("the most perfect hash browns ever") that are made with local aged Swiss cheese. I choose my favorite side of red cabbage which always delights with clove nodes and just the right amount of sour. (Pro Tip: Share the 22 oz. King and a side of Roesti with a friend. You will not go away hungry.) The dining room (the "Stube" which means living room in Swiss German) is tiny and there are no reservations, so the earlier you can get here, the better. If you do have to wait, they have a tapline that solely features New Glarus Brewing Co. beers and stock many fine spirits. Be sure to check out the so-called world's largest urinal in the men's bathroom. They sell postcards of it as souvenirs.

I had originally heard of New Glarus, "The Switzerland of America," from an article in the New York Times Travel section. Having lived 6 months in Switzerland, I had to see this village of a town that lies 6 hours north of Indy for myself. I'm always hesitant when it comes to American towns/celebrations that are supposed to be representative of other countries - they either take the authentic approach that leaves me drooling for more or the commercial, cheesey, lets make a dollar and Brittany puke route. I'm happy to report that New Glarus is the real deal and yet again, the NYT Travel crew led me in the right direction. Glarner Stube is no exception to the authenticity of New Glarus. Housed in a chalet-like building filled with a wooden interior reminiscent of a grotto I visited in the countryside of Switzerland's Italian canton of Ticino. The décor on the walls was subtle but screamed rural, traditional Switzerland with cow bells and paintings of the Alps. The small, intimate setting rounded the feel of the restaurant out. The menu: Rosti! (roe-sh-ti) The traditional potato cheese (typically Gruyere-like) hashbrown-esque dish found on menus across Switzerland. Delicious and horrible for your help, but I have to say this version was dead on. I requested some ketchup, which I'm not sure is acceptable in Switzerland? Along with my rosti I opted for the Swiss vegetarian soup - the only thing Swiss about it is the clump of Gruyere in the bottom but who cares, it was delicious. Another classic to be found on the menu is fondue. Step aside Melting Pot. After filling your stomach with hearty Swiss eats, be sure to head down the street to the Swiss shop operated by a Swiss immigrant and the bakery and butcher!

You know why this place has the rave reviews? Because everyone that comes here has already stopped by New Glarus brewery first and are nice and toasty by the time they get here. We did the same thing, but I was designated driver. We were sat in the back left corner right next to the doorway to the kitchen. It was crazy busy when we were there around 2 pm on a Saturday. The first thing I noticed was the "fresh" glass full of ice sat before me had lip and food smudges on it. Sick dude. I didn't use it. Sometimes these things happen, so I didn't say anything. We were served dinner rolls and butter. The little plates were passed around, and I got the plate that had dried on food stuck to it. Fantastic. My portabella mushroom sandwich came with a side of beer battered fries. This looked ok, and tasted good. My dining companions had the BLT sandwich, and a brat with sauerkraut. They said they were good. The waiter we had was nice, but not in the mood to chat. I got the feeling she thought we were all drunken idiots. The women's bathroom is the size of a broom closet, and it has a big picture of George Costanza from Seinfield posing his underwear. This isn't a place you go if you are looking for healthy food because everything is fried in some way. However it works well because all patrons are happily drunk. Therefore Glarner Stube = BEST FOOD EVER!! If you're sober the experience is somewhere between meh and ewwww.

Yet ANOTHER New Glarus establishment who feels bothered by tourists coming in to drink beer and spend money..... get it together.

I wish I could give a full review for this place but we never got the chance. It's a holiday weekend so I would usually give a place a little leeway for the amount of volume they have to manage, but I was really underwhelmed by the experience. The bar is interesting but the service was non-existent . We put our name on the list for the hour long wait with the intention of passing our wait at the bar. We waited for over 45 minutes and never we're acknowledged past our initial order . We left and went down the street to Kristi's where we were immediately greeted, seated, and had an awesome lunch.

Came here for the beer, bacon and cheese fest. The lines were long so we stopped in here for a bit. Had the Roesti which is a swiss fried potato sort of like a hash brown. The german potato salad was ok, but extremely vinegary. The BLT was huge and with really thick cut bacon. Service was really great. Happy to come back anytime.

Holy mackerel, is this place delicious?!?!? Yes! Yes, it is! My husband and I had our favorite fruit beer which was on tap-New Glarus Strawberry-Rhubarb. Sounds cray, but it is fantastic. I had the prime rib special with the roesti potatoes and vinegary red cabbage. My husband had the schnitzel with a salad and roasted mash. The sides come with the entree. Being from Chicago-land, this isn't the usual deal. Wow! The food was all excellent and what a great value.

Fun little destination in New Glarus. Fun atmosphere (which was actually an old bowling alley!). Tons of knick-knacks to check out. Great service! The food was delicious! I had a real craving for red cabbage and this place did NOT disappoint! Also had the fondue and Reuben. It was absolutely delicious! Only thing that soured this meal was my companion's inability to hold his beer that night at another establishment. This led to a re-introduction of that afternoon's fondue. (See Octopus Car Wash review)

Stopped in for a drink and appetizers. Got lucky and had only a short wait for a table on a Saturday mid afternoon. Within 15 minutes, the wait was more than an hour. Ample bar space, bloody Mary's, and Spotted Cow make any wait fly by. Tried the fondue, the cheese curds, a Cajun chicken sandwich with the famous Roesti potatoes, and a wedge salad. Everything was superb but the fondue was the star, right down to its delectable bread cubes. Can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu!

We stumbled upon this little gem and it was a great find if you like Swiss food and beer. Plenty of New Glarus beer on tap and I would reccommend the screaming IPA with the beer battered cheese curds. My husband ordered the meatballs that were seasoned and cooked well, but what really made the dish was the rich onion tomato mushroom based gravy. I had the veal bratwurst dinner which had the same delicious gravy but the highlight of my meal was the perfect sweet/sour red cabbage and the roesti which consists of hash brown potatoes shaped as a pancake with melted swiss cheese in the middle. It was rich and flavorful. If you do have room from dessert - the chocolate cake is a must! Totally rich and decandant and was a perfect end to a good meal. The place is a bit small and a bit pricey as well. We did have to wait for a table but it was well worth it.

Ready!?!? Picture this . . . cool afternoon or night late in fall . . . you're with friends or just a copy of Jack Kerouac and you say "man I'm hungry in a non metaphysical way" . . . you see the Stube . . .you walk in . . .either sit at the bar on in back which makes you feel as though you're in 1680's Switzerland or Germany . . you order a local beer (new glarus brewing company spotted cow) or a warming brandy . . . get a meat (or plain cheese) fondue and spend the next hour thinking about who invented a molten bowl of cheese and decided to dip meat and bread in it . . . . Back to reality now . . . well . . . it's kinda the same! Great place to catch up with friends, meet new ones and simply let your mind wander and relax. New Glarus is a great town for this (as are many in the area) and you simply cannot go wrong with the Glarner Stube!

Not good! If I could give this place a zero I would. What is up with all of the fabulous reviews? I'm thinking that people who like this place haven't developed a sophisticated enough palate to know what good German/Swiss food is OR as an earlier reviewer stated, they probably like the food because they come inebriated from the bar next door and anything tastes good by that point. I have traveled all over Europe and this place does not come close to authentic and tasteful German food. I ordered the rueben sandwich and it was soaked in grease. I looked at the bottom of my hands where I was holding the sandwich and my hands were shiny and slimy from all the grease. Gross! The corn beef was flavorless and fatty. The french fries were okay. The only thing edible on my plate was the pickle. My mom had the portabello mushroom sandwich which too was flavorless. The cabbage and German potato salad were overpowered by vinegar and not in a good way. My dad ordered the Wiener schnitzel which was dry and flat tasting. It honestly looked like someone pounded it to death with a mallet, dipped it in a fryer, froze it and reheated it in the microwave. The vegetable soup was insipid and greasy. The only word that I can come up with to describe this place is unsavory. Also, come prepared with a fly swatter. I cannot even begin to tell you how many times I had to swat flies away from my food. Makes me wonder how clean the kitchen is. One thing I usually do before eating at a restaurant I'm not familiar with is to check out their bathrooms. Believe it or not the cleanliness of a bathroom says a lot. After getting seated my mom decided to use their facilities, but the women's washroom was out of service. She had to use the men's washroom and she couldn't believe the size of the urinal. It was like floor to ceiling size which means there was a mess all over the floor. It smelled and looked disgusting. She looked mortified when she returned back to the table. Our experience went downhill from there. The only attribute saving this place is the service (and pickle), which is the reason for the one star. Service was very prompt and efficient. Our server was pleasant. All in all we left here $50 poorer and my dad ended up with heartburn.

What a great find and excellent menu. Had a fantastic meal, the local homemade sausage was super good and the krout is almost sweet...fun bar too..the pork schnitzel was perfect..as was the bread..top notch.

Reuben is awesome. One of the best I've ever eaten. Pork schnitzel sandwich is also very good. Wish I would have Reuben is one of the best we've ever had. Pork schnitzel sandwich is very good. Should've split a plate though. They give you a huge plate of roestii potatoes if you chose it as your side. Fried cheese curds are awesome. Try it out!

Like nearly everyone else, I ended up here after being at the New Glarus Brewery. It's not bad at all, but I wonder how authentically Swiss the food is. Nothing about it was bad, but not particularly memorable, and I was surprised at how few beers they had on tap or even offered at all. Obviously, they had New Glarus beers, but very, very little else.

Drove to New Glarus to take a tour of the famed brewery with my sister, and we were in need of a solid lunch spot before-hand. Read the reviews on Yelp of Glarner Stube and we were all, "Oh helll yesss." The review by Chris W. really convinced us that is where we needed to be... We took seats at the bar and marveled at the New Glarus brews on tap. We checked the menu and were in love. Swiss meatballs for me, pork schnitzel for sister. I ordered a side of red cabbage and the Roesti. Sister ordered a side of German potato salad. I had a pint of the BlackTop IPA (I'm a hophead) and sis order the Two Sisters lager. Okay. They bring out a basket of warm bread and butter. This bread was AWESOME. Warm, crusty, the inside soft and the nooks and crannies grabbed the butter superbly. Such good bread. The bartender brought out our meals and here is where the magic happened... The meatballs were in a silky, tasty, wine and mushroom gravy. The meatballs themselves were a dense, perfectly seasoned mix of veal, pork and beef. YUM-STAR. The red cabbage were vinegary and warm and oh-so tasty. Sister's pork schnitzel was not as crispy-breaded-fried as the Yelp reviews reported, so that was a tad disappointing. The meat, a little dry. Wah. We WANTED to love the pork schnitzel. So bad. But we only liked it. The German potato salad was probably the best I ever had. Vinegary, not a gluten-y mass off yuck, and small, tasty chunkers of bacon. Homina, homina, homina.... Best. The money shot? THE FREAKIN' ROESTI, YO. Okay. Imagine this: a salty, cheesy potato-y cake of love. Pure love. This, my friends, is Roesti. Don't you dare call them hashbrowns. Because they're not. Yeah, they're shredded potatoes - hashbrown-like in the technical sense, and cheesy. But not some run of the mill cheddar. FREAKIN Gruyère, y'all. Swiss-missy lovely Gruyère. In a fried potato-cake. 'Nuff said. All in all, hell yeah. Go there. The ambiance is local, yet tourist-y. We went on a Friday afternoon, around 1pm. Locals, mostly, from our assessment. Not crowded at all. As we were finishing up, a cane-wielding, crouched older gentleman came in, sat himself at the bar. The bartender immediately gave him a shorty of beer and handed him the dice cup. I loved that. Old man shook the dice cup and won a stack of bills. This told me it's a local place where gentleman of a certain age are respected, and tourist-y gals like sis and me are honored. Love that.

I once wrote a very negative review about this place. After reading all the good reviews I thought that perhaps I was in a different restaurant. Recently I was in New Glarus and checked out Glarner Stube and it was the place that I had an absolutely terrible meal. This was quite some time ago and after looking over the menu I could see that the meal I once had was no longer on the menu and that the menu had changed quite a bit. Thank goodness. In fact the menu had some very nice selections. I chose one of the veal dishes which was very good. I will try them again next time I am through. It is a cute place but a bit crowded. Extra star for their use of local foods.

Next time I'm in New Glarus, I'm going to be trying the Sportsman Grill one door over. I really, really wanted to like this place, but besides the decor, everything seemed to be working against its favor. First, the food was mediocre at best..and I think that is putting things nicely. I had the perch fillet sandwich with the roesti while my friend had the pork schnitzel sandwich with a side of soup. The fish fillets were bland and required an unhealthy amount of salt/pepper/tartar sauce before it started to taste more like fish and less like bread. The roesti was also bland, and for something that was advertised as "Swiss fried potatoes", didn't seem to be very authentic...let alone Swiss. Cheese + hashbrowns? Sounds like something served at Denny's. My friend's pork tenderloin looked so dry and overcooked that I felt even worse that her free cherry stout (with a coupon from NGBC) didn't taste better so that she could wash her sandwich down with it. It didn't seem like her tenderloin was the only one suffering from tough-chewy-meat-itis though, because the girl at the table next to us was also served with a similarly sad looking piece of meat. Second, our server looked like her puppy had just died that morning or something. The ENTIRE duration of our lunch, we could not get her to crack a smile. Is the food really that bad? Or do you just really hate your job? Glarner Stube, you need to get yourself a new wait staff! Ugh, I also stepped out of the restaurant smelling like I had been bathing in saturated oils all morning. Gross. Better ventilation please.

Stopped in while taking a little weekend "getaway" to New Glarus in January. We stayed at the Chalet Laundhaus Inn, which had a convenient path behind the hotel that leads to the main streets with restaurants, shops and bars. It only seemed right to go here, as to experience the whole Swiss WI deal. A bit expensive, but well worth the food and kitsch. Definitely order the roesti potatoes, I had never even heard of them before. They were even better mixed with my sauerkraut. My boyfriend ordered some type of cinnamon pork soup (it sounded too weird to pass up), and it was delicious. After eating, it was such a cozy atmosphere that we stayed a while. I ordered a hot drink, I think hot chocolate with rum maybe? I couldn't find it on their online menu, but I would definitely recommend any of their hot drinks during the winter. We had such a nice time, we asked if we could purchase a couple of their "Glarner Stube" pint glasses. Someone came out (possibly the owner?) and sold us a couple for $5 each. The wait staff was also very sweet, and we stopped and chatted for a while with our waitress at the bar. She recommended a couple bars within blocks, which we did follow up on after. This restaurant was one of the best parts of our trip to New Glarus. Will definitely return if I visit the town again.

It's like you're really in Switzerland... Everyone here was so nice and friendly, great food, huge portions for a small price, lots of New Glarus on tap... what more could you want? Oh yeah, an amazing poster of George Costanza in the ladies' bathroom.

After reading some reviews and having been mentioned in an article in the Chicago Tribune, it sounded like this was THE place to go. I'd agree with that sentiment. It's a very casual restaurant with neat decorations, all of which look like they came from the New Glarus Brewery store. They had a pretty sweet huge bottle cap sign with the New Glarus Beer logo on it. After seeing this, I had to buy it ($20) at the brewery. But, back to the restaurant. They definitely have all the New Glarus beers on tap that you'll find at the brewery, and maybe a couple more. It's $2 for a 7 oz glass if you just want to try the beer, and $4 a pint. Not too shabby. The beers are delicious. A must have if you're in New Glarus. Now the food. Pretty authentic (or at least authentic in my mind) Swiss food. I had the Schubling (mild sausage) which comes with a side, so I went with the Roesti. My boyfriend ordered the Swiss meatballs, also with Roesti. My sausage was about 12 inches long, which was pretty big, but I knew I could handle it (just try to ignore the double entendre!). The sausage was pretty tasty, as were the side of green beans that came with it. The Roesti is just like American hash browns, but a little creamier, because it is cooked with swiss cheese. My boyfriends balls were also delicious (again, try to ignore it!), but it's a shame they only gave him two. I think for the price, they probably could have given him a ball or two more. Let's talk about the price. Yikes. $15 for each of these plates. With three pints and two glasses, our total came to around $55. That was a hard one to swallow. I mean the food is VERY good so it's almost worth it, but it's still hard to justify that price. I guess they know a lot of tourists are coming here, but still. I think it would have been better at $10 a plate. Overall, a great place, if you can handle the price. Beware that they get pretty busy. We came here about an hour after opening and the entire dining hall was full. We ate at the bar. Oh and check their website for days they are closed. I remember seeing a sign that said they would be closed in January.

I went here for lunch and had sauerbraten, brisket, Swiss vegetable soup and roesti potatoes. The food and service were excellent. It has a very nice atmosphere for an informal meal.

We arrived at 6:15 on a Friday night and were lucky to get a table right away. I ordered one of their specialties, the 22 ounce bone-in rib eye. They claim that it is aged for 28 days. It was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. The rib eye was huge and delicious! I ordered the Roesti; Swiss fried potatoes. They were very good and the portion was large enough to share with my other 3 diners. My wife ordered the garlic shrimp special which she enjoyed. My parents ordered the baked pollock and seemed to enjoy the dish but weren't necessarily raving about it. We started with the cheese fondue and had plenty of bread for dipping. At $16 , it's a pretty good value and a unique way to start your meal. As with any of the fine New Glarus restaurants and bars, there are plenty of New Glarus Brewing choices on tap. Our total bill for fondue, 4 entrees that included soup or salad, 5 beers and 2 glasses of wine came to $128. Glarner Stube offers good food at a fair price.

Great food, great selection of New Glarus beers on tap (as well as others). I was impressed that their selection of New Glarus beers on tap was more extensive by far than the selection AT the brewery! They have $2 glasses and $4 pints, which I thought was a good size selection. We shared the cheese fondue and schublig (a beef sausage, which came with an order of roesti, the swiss cheese/hash brown concoction) among three people, which proved to be the perfect amount of food. The sausage was tasty but a bit plain, and we really liked the mustard and horseradish (tasted good but did not burn) that came with it. The roesti was perfectly cooked and I liked the ratio of cheese to potato. The cheese fondue was spot-on - nothing unusual but well put together with excellent bread chunks (we asked for a little bit more to finish off the pot). I really liked the feel of the restaurant too - you enter through a cozy bar area that had the football game on when we went through, and then get to the comfortable restaurant area. The service was quite attentive.

Great family run place and simply OUTSTANDING. If you are within 40 miles and you haven't been there, go...go out of your way because this quaint little Wisconsin hamlet is worth the visit and restaurant shouldn't be missed. The bar is warm and inviting, I'd get the Old Fahioned Whisky sweet or try a Spotted Cow from the hometown brewery of notable local fame. The whole menu is a winner, you just can't go wrong. Tiny...be prepared for a crowd, but everybody is having a blast, especially the people that get to work there!

Great food, fun atmosphere and friendly staff make this one of my favorite New Glarus restaurants. Love the fondue, stube salad, and traditional Swiss fare. A favorite of locals and tourists!

I've been coming to New Glarus for over 30 years and to the Glarner Stube nearly as long. The place has a permanence and old world charm rarely found on this side of the Atlantic. It reminds me of my favorite german restaurant in Chicago - actually my favorite restaurant period - Laschet's Inn on Irving Park near Lincoln. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. The service is excellent and the waitstaff and bartenders are pleasant and real. The food has never dissapointed, always fresh and well-prepared. The menu has something for everyone. Soups, fondue, sandwiches, steaks and cheese curds that are outstanding. The bar features many varieties of fresh, local New Glarus beer on tap so to not give the Glarner Stube a five star rating would be wrong, and I don't throw out five stars very often.

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the food! Wiener Schnitzel, roesti and soup were fantastic! There was so much food, we didn't finish! I would have loved to try the fondue, but with two people and a huge entree coming, we just couldn't. The New Glarus beer was great, and only $4 pint! This was so much better than Berghoff's in Chicago. I wish we had a Glarner Stube here! The only complaint was the wait - about 45 minutes. It's small and doesn't take reservations. However, we got to sit at the bar and enjoy our local brews.

We stopped here after out visit to the New Glarus brewery, they give you a voucher for a free beer at a bunch of the local restaurants to encourage you to check out the town. We asked which one was their favorite and it were told by the many workers that Glarner Stube was the place to eat. And they were right. This place was awesome, from the food and drink, to the people, to the decor, Glarner Stube is a great pub. We were seated immediately when we arrived and I got my free New Glarus beer right away, they had their Staghorn Oktoberfest on tap and it was delicious. We started off with the beer battered cheese curds...And these cheese curds were amazing. I seriously had a dream about them the other night. They were the size of a hush-puppy and were cheesy and greasy and decadent. They have to be the best I have ever had, I would go back for these alone! For entree's I ordered the Pork Schnitzel, this was grilled then fried, and was simply delicious. I have never heard of pork schnitzel and I am now a fan. My lady had the Ruben and was completely smitten by it. The staff was very friendly and the bartender was a hoot. This is a great find in the area and I will be back!

We have a winnah! With all the problems you can have in other restaurants, like, bad waitressing, getting the wrong order, etc. None of that here north of the border! Food was spot on. Our waitress was timely. And not horrendously expensive. If it wasn't for their winters, I might consider moving here just for this restaurant's food!

Best cheese curds ever...Seriously! I no longer live in Wisconsin but everytime I go back I have to stop in for the cheese curds, they are that good! Even better than the ones you get at Cheese Days in Monroe every other year. The Reuben is delicious too. The portions are big and I am always a happy camper when I leave.

Went for lunch with a couple of friends and really enjoyed the food. The deep fried cheese curds were amazing and our table could not get enough of them. I could have personally eaten another full plate of those cheesy morsels. My sandwich was just OK but the potato side dish made the meal. I can't remember the name of the potato dish but it was fried, cheesy, salty goodness. I would definitely go back just for that side dish. Everyone also enjoyed the food and the beer selections.

I love the Glarner Stube! I don't live in Wisconsin, but whenever I am in town, I go to New Glarus and eat at the Glarner Stube. This place is amazing. The food is delicious. The waitstaff is fast. The prices are reasonable, considering the portion suite. I love this place and can't wait until I go to Madison again!

We weren't sure what kind of food to expect in this little village, so we were pleasantly surprised by what we ordered at Glarner Stube. Great Swiss/German food in a very cute, quaint place. We started off by ordering the cheese platter, which was the one dish we were slightly disappointed with. First of all, the cheese didn't come out until after our entrees were served and even then the waitress didn't describe or even IDENTIFY the cheeses on the platter. The salads that came with 2 of our meals was very good, though. Then the delicious entrees came out: my brother ordered the meatballs, which were good, especially with the gravy. We ordered the schublig, which we was incredibly flavorful. Nicely ground, fresh, meat and the accompanying mustard went very well with it. We ordered 2 rostis with those entrees based on the recommendation from a worker at the New Glarus Brewery, and though it was good, we weren't mind-numbingly blown away by it, like we were led to believe. We also ordered the reuben, which I was kind of reluctant to order since I was craving a wiener schnitzel but was scared off by the price. But the reuben was one of the best reubens I've ever had--the meat was thick cut, which I like a lot, and there was just enough swiss, dressing, and saurkraut to balance each other out. And the rye bread was buttery and crisp. Delicious. And the kid's hot dog meal was pretty good for its price. If you're in New Glarus you've got to try Glarner Stube. It's a cozy and wonderful, local bar/restaurant with very tasty food. It was so good I didn't even mind that the patrons at the bar were smoking and going crazy from the Brewers game on TV. We can't wait to eat here again.

This place is great! First time in New Glarus, so I went to trusty Yelp to find somewhere to grab dinner. This place obviously stuck out, and I'm glad it did! New Glarus on tap for $4 pints (awesome! Especially coming from Chicago). The atmosphere was cozy and warm, especially nice when it was raining outside. The bartender was so sweet and remembered my name, which always gets bonus points - haha. Food was super tasty (I had the Weiner Schnitzel), I will say though that the portion sizes are GIGANTIC. I don't think I ate 1/2 of my food, which was sad. And I may have left with about 5 lbs of fat added to my waistline, but that's okay ;) Sometimes taste wins over health. I would absolutely recommend this place to others who are stopping through.

Try the Roesti, which is essentially hash browns and Swiss cheese. Needless to say, it has enough calories for days, but it's very good. They also have all the local beers on tap. Cool, authentic spot.

As far as I know, this is the best spot for lunch after a New Glarus Brewery visit. The brewery wasn't serving food during our Saturday visit, and fortunately for us, Glarner Stube is just a short drive or a brief hike down the road, right in the middle of the New Glarus main street district. The food has an authentic Swiss character and it's comfortable and cabin-like inside.

Great fun place to go. New Glarus is a quaint German village and Glarner Stube fits in perfectly. It is not a fancy restaurant, but from the barbers chair to the bar to the men's room it is a memorable experience. The best schnitzel I have had and the mashed potatoes alone are worth the trip. The cheese curds are the perfect compliment to the spotted cow beer brewed just down the street. My wife actually prefers to get totally naked at the bar. What, it's a nice light beer. So much happens in New Glarus that there can be a wait, but that is when the beer and curds come in handy. It is very clean, just not new or fancy. One of our favorite places and in a pretty little village.

I chose Glarner Stube for dinner after a long afternoon of drinking beer at New Glarus brewing. The reviews seemed to indicate that this was THE place to eat in town. I walked to Glarner Stube from my hotel, so I didn't deal with parking, but it looks like it was street parking only. As we entered the place, I was surprised by how small it is inside. The front is a classic bar layout... skinny room with bar on the left. There wasn't even enough room for tables on the right though. Going to the back brings you to a very small dining room with roughly 10 tables. We were seated at a small 2 person table by the wall. The atmosphere was dark and classic with lots of wood and old fashioned looking stuff. I was glad that it was a Wednesday evening and not busy at all, because I would have felt very claustrophobic if the dining room were filled to capacity. We had been given coupons for free small beers from New Glaurus Brewing, so we started out with those. They had a decent selection of beers to choose from. The waitress seemed disengaged. She was very superficially nice, but it seemed like she was just going through the motions. It made me a little uncomfortable. The food was OK. My sausage was overcooked and it took 10 minutes to get a waitress to bring me some mustard. The German potato salad was warm and sour and tasty. My wife ordered the roesti and it was delicious! It was also a huge serving, so there was plenty for us to share. She also ordered some kind of veal dish, but I cannot remember the name. I do remember liking it more than my sausage. I also liked that the green beans were not cooked to death. I like them when they are still green and have a little snap left in them. The sad part is that we were so full from drinking so much beer all day that we could not finish our meals or try dessert. We didn't even order another beer after our free ones. (I felt a little bad about that, but I simply couldn't fit anything else in my belly.) I really wish I could have spent a little time sipping a beer at the old fashioned bar. Maybe next time. Overall, I found Glarner Stube acceptable. I didn't find it to be as amazing as some other reviewers. That could be due to having reached the limits of my gastrointestinal systems, the less than stellar service, or a midweek lull. I would give Glarner Stube another shot if I was in the area, but I wouldn't make it a destination.

After spending the afternoon at New Glarus Brewery, we were hungry and wanted to get something to eat. We were given two passes for a free drink from various establishments in the town itself. I asked at the brewery what location had the widest selection of New Glarus' Beers I was told here and another place, but this one was the "classier" of the two. We were able to find it easy enough, but finding a parking spot was difficult. Its street parking only and we just happened to luck into a spot someone had just vacated down the street. From the exterior it keeps up with the Swiss theme of the town. Walking in, I was surprised by the size of it. This place was tiny. It was almost like someone put a roof over an alley, with a bar in the front and a small dining area in the rear. The bar ran the length of the left side of the bar and there was just enough room on the right side for people trying to get to the back to get by without bumping into patrons sitting at the bar. We sat at the bar. It had a copper sheeting top on it. I liked the look of it, but at the seams where the copper sheets met it was soldered together messily. The solder was lumpy and caused the top to be uneven. Make sure that you take care if you are sitting at one of the seams and you set your drink down, it can get... interesting. The bar atmosphere was nice enough. It was relatively clean, but could stand some dusting in some of the higher places. I'm sure that when this place was originally built it was beautiful, but it looks like it may need some updating. Polish some stuff up, refinish the wood, etc. Other than that, it had a nice Swiss cottage feel to it, including the faux hearth over the cash register. The only beer they had on tap was from the New Glarus Brewing Company. SCORE! I love that they didn't even offer anything from any other brewery on tap. You could get it in a bottle if you wanted, but if you are in New Glarus... why would you want to do that? The free pints are in these small 8 ounce glasses. Hey, free is free so I'm not complaining. The menu has a German/Swiss theme to it. My wife and I both had the bratwurst with sauerkraut and a side of German Potato salad. The Kraut was excellent! I don't know if they made it themselves, but if it's store bought I want to know what brand. The brat itself was good, it was a little milder in flavor than I'm accustomed to, but I'm not complaining. The German potato salad was excellent. Again, I'm pretty sure this was homemade, but I could be wrong. We were satisfied with our meal. The service was a little spotty. The bartender seemed a little gruff and I think he was surprised two non-locals sat at the bar. We didn't go long without drinks; our food was brought out in a timely manner. He just seemed like he would rather be doing anything else. It didn't help with the experience.

By no means am I an expert on New Glarus nightlife. However, Glarner Stube has a few things going for it. First of all the vibe is totally chill, but from my experience, this is the case throughout Wisconsin. Second, the owners are really cool. Nice guys who've owned the place for a decade or two. Third, they have this cute little tradition where you attach a silver dollar to a thumbtack and a dollar bill and throw it at the ceiling, getting the tack to hold the dollar in place. But most importantly, they serve Wisconsin Belgian Red from New Glarus Brewery. In all my travels and in all my experiences, this is the finest beer on the planet. I had bought a few bottles from the brewery earlier in the day, but wanted to fill my stomach with the stuff before departing. Like most Belgian beers, they are served in 750 mL bottles. And despite its ruby red color, and floral boquet, it's really, really heavy beer. However, this didn't stop me from downing the first bottle in quick order. Or the second. I got half way through the third, and slowed down a bit as I got so full, as well as groggy. But I forged on and finished that bottle as well. The bartender said in all their time they've served it, they've never seen anybody drink like that. I wear this fact like a badge.

If you're driving through New Glarus, the little Swiss town in Southern Wisconsin, this is a great place to stop for some authentic European fare. I split the Pork Schnitzel Sandwich and the Wienerschnitzel with a friend. Both were generous delicious portions with a large helping of hot and tasty french fries on the side. As a bonus, they have quite a variety of New Glarus Brewing Company beers on taps to wash down your delicious Lunch. On a funny note, the tiny washroom here resembles the tight quarters of a bathroom in economy class on a discount airline.

Went on a recommendation from a friend. Service was great. Sandwich was massive and provided a good base ahead of the brewery tour. And if you want to sample New Glarus brews, perfect sampling (smaller) size glasses of beer for $2 and they had more options than the tasting room at the brewery.

What you should know is that this an authentic swiss restaurant - meaning they specialize in meat and potatoes and use a lot of butter. Also, you're going to pay a little more for the experience/atmosphere and the finer quality food. If this is not appealing to you then go someplace else. If this is appealing to you then you will love it.

We had a late lunch, after riding the bike trail. Clean, nicely decored, friendly staff. A great selection of beers-especially New Glarus beers. We had a New Glarus Totally Naked, and it was excellent. My wife had the Reuben with red cabbage as a side. I had a prime rib sandwich, with the German potato salad as my side. Both were very good. Well prepared, and fresh. A nice place to have lunch or dinner. We will stop in the next time we are in town!

I love bars like this - wish we had more of them here in Chicago! Everyone here is so friendly and warm. They serve New Glarus beer, of course, with a host of authentic Swiss entrees and American food. I wasn't expecting much from it and was so pleasantly surprised. First, you have to get the swiss fondue - how can you go to a swiss bar and not get it? So delicious, with huge chunks of sourdough bread to dip in it. By the time we had finished with the cheese fondue, we were almost full, but we decided that we had to try some of their unique offerings anyway. My husband had some kind of thing called plasteli (not spelled correctly!) which was a combo of veal, chicken and pork served with mushrooms in a creamy sauce. He was in heaven. Being incredibly full and ready for some veggies, I had the vegetable platter. Now, only in Wisconsin can a vegetable platter manage to be a forbidden treat! My delicious prepared red cabbage, broccoli, and grilled portobello came with a side of potatoes. I picked the Roesti, which is some Swiss type of dish - hash browns with onions and swiss cheese. The platter was seriously the side of a huge serving dish, and they were so darn good! As we were ready to roll out the door because we were so full, we inadvertently forgot our leftovers. Which was a total drag because we were craving those potatoes a couple of hours later!

A kinda small old-rustic log cabin-type of place. We had our meal at the bar. The place still gets quite a bit locals, usually having a drink at the bar. I actually think I was the only out-of-towner there. The one thing that I saw here and at the Sportman's Bar down the street was that both bartenders were rolling dice for money with the patrons. Service wasn't bad, the older bartender was a really casual guy. My only real gripe were the prices. I'm sure the restaurant does a good business when they have the brewery recommending all the tourists to dine at the Glarner Stube, but they could lower the prices just a smige. Its good that you can get a sandwich off the lunch menu for around $8 with a side potato but all the non-sandwich items were at least $12 or more. $9 for cheese curds? Already spent $100+ on NG beer, which explains my frugalness. The other person I was with got a schublig for $15 and it was just a plain long sausage and while it was good, but not anything great, especially with the price. I was also surprised how bland the acclaimed roesti potato dish was. While they give you a hardy portion (6-inch in diameter) it had little flavor and was very greasy. $31 for 2 people, 2 half pints (1 was free) and we weren't really all that full.

The Roesti is awesome; swiss cheese mixed in with a hash brown with some good oils and such. All of the food was great and seemed traditional. Great atmosphere too and all of the New Glarus Brewery beers on tap. The New Glarus Brewery is incredible too! Great restaurant to visit; great experience and atmosphere.

Stopped for a quick dinner there recently while in New Glarus. I would go back again Food was very good and tasty. I had the pork tenderloin sandwich was was very good and my wife had the Ruben which was excellent (real corned beef! yah!). The star of the show was the swiss hashbrowns (call Roesti). Next time I'll just order two big plates of that. OUTSTANDING. Perfectly cooked with swiss cheese in the middle. The only that that could have made it better was if they used fresh potatoes. Price was reasonable for the sandwiches. Dinners were a bit pricer which was why we opted for sandwiches. I would eat here again. Plus you can get New Glarus Moon Man pale ale on tap :)

Love this place! You absolutely have to order the fondue- it's enough for 3 or 4 as an appetizer or 2 as an entree. Or you can do as the wife & I do: get it as an app, eat half & take the rest home. Fantastic stuff. I can also highly recommend the dry-aged steak and the roesti potatoes. Very good local beers on tap too. If you go on a Fri. or Sat. night then try to go early- the place will fill up & you will wait.

LARGEST URINAL IN THE MIDWEST. No, I'm not kidding. Check it out at urinal.net/glarner_stube . Funny thing is, that's not even the best thing about the 'Stube. Notwithstanding the fact that the restaurant is located in New Glarus, the home of "Spotted Cow", but this place cooks up some serious Swiss dishes: sauerbraten, pastetli, kalberwurst (veal sausage - savory!). You like fondue? They "due" it here, big time. The urinal...yes, it's quite a draw. But the food will keep you coming back.

Very cozy pub with good service. Their fondue came with excellent sourdough bread. I also recommend the vegetable soup, and a friend of mine swears by a traditional Swiss potato dish that starts with an "R".....I can't remember the name now, but she says it's great! I was going to order it, but the portions here are so huge that I couldn't even conceive of putting one more thing in my mouth. You won't walk away hungry! This is probably a great place to go on a chilly day.

This is our third visit. Our first was when we "discovered" it by accident about 2 1/2 years ago. This is located in our favorite WI town, New Glarus! The Swiss architecture in this tiny village and the church, little park, shops, restaurants, and bakery, always makes this a fun place to visit. The restaurant is in an old building that fits into the Swiss architecture of the village. When you step inside it is like you've been transported to Switzerland! The bar is in a long narrow room with old, dark, wood floors and light-colored wood planked walls on which Swiss pictures hang. On long narrow shelves along the top of the walls sit Swiss beer steins and other nicknacks. The dining room is in the back, past the bar, with a similar decor (There is also an old wooden crossbow hanging on the wall!) and rough hewn wooden posts and beams. We were sitting at a small wooden table for two and a waitress promptly came by to tell us the night's special (Sauerbraten) and give us water. We ordered the special to share (NO SPLIT CHARGE!) with soup and salad. For sides we red cabbage and Roesti (The excellent Swiss cheesy potato hash browns kind of thingy.) Our special came with green beans, too. The waitress brought us bread and butter as we were waiting for our meal. The bread was excellent! It was a French demi baguette roll that had a chewy exterior and the inside was light and airy with Swiss cheese-like air holes. (They do not make their own bread, but they chose wisely. The bread is from Tribeca Oven, a company that specializes in artisan breads.) The soup was their "Swiss Vegetable". It was like minestrone with chunks of fresh vegetables, but also had swiss cheese melted throughout. It was great! The salad was chopped green leaf lettuce with cheesy croutons, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers. We ordered it with bleu cheese dressing which was mostly bleu cheese and not a lot dressing...Great! (It guess the Swiss are all about cheese. No wonder the Swiss love Wisconsin "cheese heads!) Our waitress offered to bring some extra bleu cheese, so we went for it! We basically ended up with a bleu cheese salad! Our Sauerbraten was served spilt on two plates and both presented nicely with long, lightly steamed green beans and long slices of marinated beef drenched with thick, rich brown sauce. Our red cabbage was served in a small serving cup and the Roesti totally covered its own dinner plate like a huge, thick pancake. Everything was fantastic and even though we had shared we couldn't finish everything. After dinner we enjoyed a nice walk around the village, before we had to head off into the night. We look forward, again, to our next visit to New Glarus and Glarner Stube!

I'll give it three stars because everyone else in our party of 8 seemed happy... I was less than thrilled because the only vegetarian-friendly option is a grilled portobello mushroom cap and a couple side dishes. If you like meat and beer and really cheese-filled potatoes, this is a place for you.

If you find yourself wandering the winding European-esque streets of New Glarus, Wisconsin, feel free to pass on through the Glarnerstube, a pleasant and relaxed european restaurant and bar. This has to be one my favorite bars. Dark wood, comfortable vibe....it's like kickin' back in a Chalet buried in Swiss alps or something. The food is always really solid, being mostly Swiss-German stuff. I was quite curious about their house-cured meats plate...but didn't get around to it this time. One MAJOR bonus is that they have a ton of New Glarus beers on tap and you can buy a little tapper glass for a couple of bucks. I love that about Wisconsin.

After a tour of the New Glarus Brewing Company, the clerk in the souvenir shop recommended Glarner Stube to my mother, brother and me, so we took a chance. Good decision! We got here about 11:30 on a weekday morning, walked past the bar area to the dining room, and were seated right away by some very friendly staffers. We immediately noticed the rich wood paneling and the fun Swiss/New Glarus decor: beer steins, shields and crests, farm tools, plates, figurines, etc. It was very cozy and intriguing, but not at all stifling or tacky. Our food came pretty quickly, and not a moment too soon: By 12:05, the dining area, nearly empty when we arrived, was nearly full of (I assume) area businessmen on their lunch breaks. I had the portobello mushroom sandwich with fries, and it was the best portobello sandwich I've ever had. The portobello cap had been lightly marinated or seasoned in a subtle, slightly tangy mixture, which complemented the mushroom flavor without overpowering it. The portobello was nearly blackened on one side, but it didn't taste burnt, and it was less drippy -- in a good way -- than similar sandwiches elsewhere. The melted slice of Wisconsin cheddar on top was just right, but the huge slice of onion on the side was a little much. The bun was hearty and stood up to the moisture of the mushroom without wussing out. The fries, batter-dipped and fried, were also among the best I've tried. My brother had the vegetarian sampler with roesti, but I'm not a huge fan of hash browns or of Swiss cheese, so I won't comment on the bite of roesti that I tried. For what it's worth, Glarner Stube appears to be surprisingly vegetarian-friendly, and I bet it would be just as good for dinner as it was for our lunch. My mother, brother and I all loved the service, the atmosphere, and the food. We hope to return next summer!

Great place. We stopped here on a whim and it was very satisfying. Prices range from $6-9 for sandwiches to $15-25 for the main dishes. Most of the sandwiches were good. This says "Little Switzerland" all over it. Tip: Great place to sample New Glarus beer, as they have about 6 kinds on tap... and it's like $1.75 for a 8oz. glass. Warning: they use a lot of sauerkraut on anything that has it. Also, the fondue app is gigantic. Easily enough for 8-10 people. Oh, and watch out for the urinal... it'll get you.

There claim for the largest urinal in the midwest might be false. The place that holds that honor in my opinion is "The Mutiny Corp" in Chicago yelp.com/biz/3Idhzbu3qHy… With that a side the Glarner Stube is great. Good beers and amazing service, the bartender was so nice (her drinking could have something to do with that).

Great food and completely unkitchy ethnic atmosphere (this place is Swiss the way that a South Side Irish bar is Irish). Cheese fondue was enormous and I don't reccomend it for less than 3 people. Schhnitzel sandwich was a moist and tender but almost baste of breading compared to the other German and Viennese schnitzels I have had. EIGHT NEW GLARUS BEERS ON TAP= EPIC WIN.

Accuracy: 10/10 Taste: 10/10 Consistency: 10/10 Service: 9/10 Ambiance: 8/10 Overall: 9.5/10 Ruth Chris, Tornado Room and Smokey's Club got nothing on this place! Hands down the best NY strip I've ever had; 16oz of heaven. Fried cheese curd are unbeatable.

I have an obsession with New Glarus. Between you and me I used to pluck daisies and daydream about running for mayor. Turns out New Glarus doesn't have a mayor. When I was a kid I thought I would grow up to be a dinosaur. Once I found out that dinosaurs were extinct and even if they weren't there was no way I could become a dinosaur, I was devastated. Same story for my New Glarus political ambitions. Sigh. All this is a long way of saying that New Glarus is a special place, and the Glarner Stube is the Hope diamond of the town...without the freaky curse...I think. If you're dining at the Glarner Stube you're obligated to get the fondue. Here's hoping you're not eating with a chip on your shoulder because, honestly, the fondue should fill you up. If you're going to fondue then I suggest you either make that your meal or split an entree with a pal. If you don't have a pal start gabbin' at the bar. Someone will come to your aid. If that doesn't work then call me. Guaranteed I have nothing better to do than eat fondue with you. If fondue isn't your thing then try a traditional Swiss dish. Not so hot if you're meat averse. Vegetables are only a wicked rumor in the cantons of Switzerland. I cannot recommend the deep fried cheese curds highly enough. Same goes for the New Glarus beer, which is damn near impossible to find outside of Wisconsin. The Glarner Stube is also famous for its gigantic urinal, billed as the largest in the Midwest. Whether the Midwest includes Ohio and/or Kansas is beyond me. Whether the urinal is in fact smaller than the one in the Mutiny in Chicago is of no interest. I do know that I have four postcards that depict the famous urinal. Pretty sweet, right? Now if only I had someone to send them to. Glarnerphiliac Insider Tip o' The Day: The Glarner Stube closes every February or March. (I think it's March.) The family that owns the place goes snowmobiling for a month.

I really don't get it. The fondue was mediocre, the roesti = meh, the weinerschnitzel was bland and dry. Aside from the food being just ok, the design of this place is wicked. The bar area is long and skinny and the dining room is reminiscent of what I would picture an old German beer hall to look like. Wood everywhere and everything. I'd have no problem going back for a beer, but count me out for dinner.

I don't go anywhere near New Glarus without getting to the Glarner Stube- their cheese fondue is a top shelf experience. The place has great atmosphere, nice people work here, and the bar is cozy. This place is as close to perfect as you'll find. As far as the urinal goes- it's a kind of weird fact about the place. It's the last reason anybody should come here- if you want to see an identical urinal in a place that's not worth visiting for any other reason on most nights, go to the Mutiny on N. Western Ave in Chicago, or Lamplighters in Palatine, Il- both those places have identical urinals, but nowhere near the pleasures to offer that the Glarner Stube has!

This place wasn't terrible, but you do not get what you pay for. We visited Glarner because it seemed like one of New Glarus's nicest places. The roesti was sitting in a pool of grease at the bottom of the plate and appeared to be a cheese and frozen hashbrown pancake. I am in no way a picky eater, but we ate 3 bites and didn't want to continue. I ordered the pork schnitzel sandwich, and my friend got the fish fry special. The fish was good, but the sandwich was surprisingly bad. The bread was a spongy bun from a package, and the pork was a thin layer of seasoned meat with traces of sauce and onion. Overall, it actually looked like a McRib sandwich. It was dry and not worth the $15+ spent on the entree. The sidedish was just as unappealing. I got the steamed cabbage, expecting a chunk of it. Instead, I got a small bowl of hot cabbage that tasted like cheap, canned sauerkraut. With 2 meals and a $40 bill I expected a lot more. You can get amazing meals in Madison for half of this price. This is a place that doesn't have much competition because of the small town and can afford to inflate their prices. I wouldn't return to Glarner Stube, even if it was somebody else's treat.

If you picked up this restaurant and placed in a bustling Metropolitan Area you would have large lines around the block. Their bar & dining room has the best rustic look I've seen. It's a mixture of old swiss relics, beautiful wood grained walls, and shiney brown copper glowing everywhere. The food here is impeccable. His execution of wonderful traditional Swiss fare is so tasty and creative, most, if not all leave this place wanting to visit again. The Glarner Stube makes a true Roesti. Roesti is a swiss styled hashbrown/ potato pancake with swiss cheese & onions cooked inside of it. They have beef & cheese fondue, once you walk into this place generally, you get a great whiff of their amazing cheese fondue begging out to be devoured. The owners are the friendliest people. Gary Westby is an outstanding chef, probably one of the most talented and funniest Ive had the pleasure in meeting. If youre in a hurry, get the Beef Fondue Bowl. The schnitzel is awesome. Not typically a fan of schnitzel, but theirs is the real deal and it's done perfectly. The service is always good, never had problem here. The beer, awww sheeeeet, I almost forgot about the beer. Yes, great selection of beer, but I would go with any choice from the New Glarus Brewing Company, you wont be disappointed. Once you've drank 5 or 6 there's the largest urinal in the Midwest to accompany you. Enjoy this little treasure.

Stopped by for lunch after touring the New Glarus Brewery. Super homey interior with swiss knicknacks and verrryyy friendly waitstaff. We got a coupon for a free 8oz New Glarus beer with our tour, so we cached those in and ordered some cheese curds to start. These were unlike anything we've had so far.. they were about 8 times the size of normal curds, and dipped in a slightly sweet and light batter (it reminded me of funnel cake batter, but my companion wasn't convinced). They were delicious, and very mild. I can't believe the two of us polished off that whole plate (which was easily a pound). Our one complaint is that the dipping sauces offered were ranch dressing and ketchup.. I had mine plain. He ordered the bratwurst sandwich with kraut, and I got the swiss style schnitzel sandwich. The schnitzel was seriously amazing. It was grilled (not breaded and fried) and topped with sauteed onions. The pork is local.. so flavorful.. so moist! The bratwurst was less like an american style brat and more like a bavairan weisswurst. It had a very fine grain and mild flavor. The prices are reasonable too at ~$7/sandwich. I'm sure we'll be back.. the food is definitely craveable!

If you can't find something you like on this menu, you might as well quit! We'd been wanting to visit New Glarus for a long time, since we've been enjoying the fine products of the brewery for many years now...In any case, we came to the Glarner Stube after reading about it in the NY Times and could not have been more pleased-- we were famished and it was 4:30 p.m. My husband didn't think they would be serving, but they were. Of course, we ordered Spotted Cow and Two Women beers, enjoyed the delicious bread and whipped butter, and then got down to business: I had the baked cod. It was a huge filet, cooked well and accompanied by a generous salad and masjed potatoes (I'd get something different next time- the potatoes were kind of soupy, with the gravy mixed in). The ambience was all-wood and the people were friendly and fun. We really felt like we were on vacation. My husband got Swiss meatballs and even though we are Swedish, he declared them excellent! I'd love to come back and spend an afternoon at the bar...Oh, our hilarious waitress proudly mentioned the largest urinal in the state to my husband before we left. He confirmed that her boast was legit.

Great Fondu, love the owners. Wiener Schnitzel is to die for and their burgers are also really good.

Love this little town! I would never have discovered it were it not for my parents who make a fall pilgrimage every year to this quaint little town for the best Weiner Schnitzle and those potatoes, oh my! The Spotted Cow beer is definitely worth a trip too. Love the ambiance at the Glarner Stube- so very small-town Germany! I really wish there were a place like this near me in Chicago-I would be there almost every day. Love it!

Though I can't claim to be an expert on Swiss food, I do know that lunch I had here was fantastic. Fondue, the Swedish hash browns (I forget the name) and pints of New Glarus Naked for $2.50. If you're ever in this quaint little burg, check this tavern out.

This place is straight out of Switzerland! Absolutely amazing! I let my wife do all the ordering as she loves this type of food! We did the Fried Cheese Curds, and yes, they were the best we've ever had! Big fluffy fried dough, sharp cheddar cheese, with a gooey texture, just delectable! You really had to stop yourself from eating yourself sick, as the portion was big for two people! Then we had the Pork Schnitzel Sandwich, which was a little slice of heaven. This Grilled pork tenderloin, had sauteed onions, herb butter, and was served on a hoagie roll, that was warmed and a tad crisped! Possibly one of the best Sammie's I have ever tasted. Very fresh and flavorful, to say the least. We both had a New Glarus draft, as they had things like Cabin Fever and ABT, which were not even on draft at the Brewery down the street! That New Glarus Brewery is also a must see if you are in this area!

Favorite place to retreat for a family meal... Cheese fondue, roesti to die for, best fish fry I've had in ages, and good beer. Worth the trek. Great for lunch or dinner. Go as fast as you can! Go often!
